Gekkeikan Traditional Junmai Sake - 750 ml
Japan (Kyoto) and USA (California). Founded in 1637 by Jiemon Okura in the Fushimi district of Kyoto, Gekkeikan is one of the world's oldest and most iconic sake breweries. The brand name translates to "Crown of Laurel," a symbol of victory and glory adopted in 1905. While the brewery is deeply rooted in 14 generations of Japanese heritage, this "Traditional" expression is also brewed in Folsom, California, using American water and ingredients to cater specifically to the North American market while maintaining authentic quality standards.
Description
This signature Junmai is a classic, versatile sake known for its balanced and approachable profile. In the glass, it is clear and light-bodied. The nose is surprisingly bright, featuring aromas of fresh green apples, sweet banana, and juicy apricot, accented by hints of custard and a light earthiness. On the palate, it is smooth and mellow with a herbaceous character and notes of grapefruit and minerals. It offers a clean, well-balanced acidity and a gentle umami undertone that leads into a crisp, dry finish. As a Junmai-shu, it is brewed purely from rice, water, yeast, and koji with no added alcohol. ABV 14.6%–15.6%.
Food Pairing
Gekkeikan Traditional is celebrated for its exceptional versatility at various temperatures. Its clean, dry profile makes it an ideal match for classic Japanese fare such as sushi, sashimi, and tempura. It also pairs remarkably well with more robust dishes, including grilled yakitori, roasted meats, and coconut-based Asian curries. For a unique combination, try it alongside mature cheeses or mushroom risotto to highlight its earthy umami. It can be served chilled (highlighting fruit notes), at room temperature, or warmed (enhancing body and acidity).
