Azelia Barolo Bricco Fiasco 2021
Introduction
This red wine originates from Italy, specifically from the Castiglione Falletto commune within the Barolo DOCG region of Piedmont. Founded in 1920, Azienda Agricola Azelia is a historic family estate currently managed by fifth generation winemaker Lorenzo Scavino and his father Luigi. The Bricco Fiasco vineyard, named for the flask like shape of its hill ('fiasc' in local dialect), was replanted in the 1940s and features vines that are now 85 to 86 years old. The winery is celebrated for its 'pre industrial' approach, using indigenous yeasts and long macerations to craft wines that perfectly express the unique white calcareous soils of the site.
Wine Description
Azelia Barolo Bricco Fiasco 2021 presents a brilliant mid ruby colour with intense garnet highlights. The nose is extraordinarily perfumed and floral, offering a complex bouquet of rose petals, violets, and citrus leaf intertwined with a core of red summer berries, wild strawberry, and pomegranate. On the palate, the wine is full bodied and robust yet possesses a 'gracefully weightless' elegance, featuring rich dark raspberry and cherry flavours balanced by vibrant, saline infused acidity. It is characterized by its firm, sandy tannins and a persistent finish marked by notes of blood orange, mint, and white pepper. This 100% Nebbiolo was aged for 24 months in large oak casks (botti grandi) and has an ABV of 14.5% to 15.0%. The estate follows practicing organic farming methods. The optimal drinking window for this vintage is from 2028 through 2044.

Food Pairing
The structured tannins and elegant mineral profile of this Barolo make it a natural partner for rich, savoury dishes. It pairs perfectly with roasted game birds like grouse with porcini, game ravioli, or a classic Osso Bucco à la milanaise. Its floral and spicy notes also complement mushroom and truffle lasagne, Barolo risotto with blue cheese, or aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or Grana Padano.
Vintage Quality
The 2021 vintage in Piedmont is regarded as a stellar, 'once in a generation' year for Barolo collectors, frequently compared to the legendary 2010 and 2016 vintages. The growing season provided ideal conditions for Nebbiolo to develop intense fruit concentration, high acidity, and a powerful tannic structure built for long term cellaring. The winemaker's skill in navigating the season's specific challenges resulted in a Bricco Fiasco that is described as an 'archetype of elegance' and one of the finest wines produced at the estate in years.
