Zuccardi Piedra Infinita 2020
This extraordinary red wine originates from the Paraje Altamira IG in the San Carlos subregion of the Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina. Zuccardi Valle de Uco, spearheaded by the visionary Sebastián Zuccardi, established the Finca Piedra Infinita vineyard in one of the most challenging environments in the world a landscape so dominated by massive granite rocks that over a thousand truckloads of stone had to be moved just to plant the vines. The winemaking philosophy is one of "conquering the stone," focusing on micro-parcel vinification to express the raw, vertical energy of this high-altitude alluvial fan.
Wine Description
The 2020 Zuccardi Piedra Infinita is a "true mountain wine" with a saturated, deep ruby-purple colour. The nose is ethereal and highly precise, revealing layers of blue and black fruits, crushed violets, and red currants, underpinned by savory notes of black olive tapenade and a distinct mineral scent of iron and graphite. On the palate, the wine is taut and vertical, showcasing a rich, chalky texture and a powerful structural frame. It is characterized by vibrant acidity and "colossal" yet fine-grained tannins that lead into a long, mineral-streaked finish with hints of blood orange and sour cherry. This 100% Malbec was fermented in concrete vats with native yeasts, with aging primarily in concrete to ensure a pure expression of terroir without oak interference.
Food Pairing
This wine's structural intensity and mineral grip make it an ideal partner for roasted game birds with fruit reductions or a classic roasted turkey. It is equally well-suited for traditional Argentine pairings like grilled ribeye steak or beef tartare with capers and herbs, which highlights the wine's raw elegance. For an earthy vegetarian option, a roasted beetroot and goat cheese salad provides a perfect tangy counterpoint to the wine’s calcareous minerality.
