Tignanello 2016 (by Tenuta Tignanello) - 1.5 Litre Bottle
Introduction
This red wine is from Italy, produced in the Toscana IGT region of Tuscany. Produced by Tenuta Tignanello (Marchesi Antinori), it is a milestone in Italian viticulture as one of the first Sangiovese wines to be aged in barriques and to include non traditional varieties like Cabernet. The Tignanello estate features limestone-rich soils at an altitude of 350 to 400 metres, where the winemaking philosophy focuses on capturing the unique essence of this single vineyard parcel.
Wine Description
The 2016 Tignanello 1.5 Litre bottle displays an intense and bright ruby red colour. The nose is expressive and complex, featuring aromas of ripe red fruits, blackberries, and wild berries harmoniously blended with hints of vanilla, chocolate, and Mediterranean herbs like rosemary. On the palate, the wine is rich and vibrant, offering a fruit core of black cherry and plum supported by firm, silky tannins. It is characterized by its laser focus, racy energy, and an extraordinary balance that leads into a long, persistent finish with notes of liquorice and graphite. This blend consists of 80% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc. The wine has an ABV of 14% and an optimal drinking window from 2021 through 2045, especially for this larger format.

Food Pairing
The vibrant acidity and structured nature of this wine make it a versatile partner for rich Italian and Mediterranean dishes. Suggested pairings include Bistecca alla Fiorentina (Florentine T-Bone steak), roasted pork shoulder with garlic, or herb crusted rack of lamb. It also pairs excellently with hearty pastas like pappardelle with wild boar ragu, earthy mushroom risotto, and aged cheeses such as older Pecorino.
Vintage Quality
The 2016 vintage in Tuscany is widely considered excellent, marked by a mild spring and a warm summer that allowed for optimal ripening. Favourable day-night temperature swings in September were ideal for Sangiovese, resulting in wines with superb structure, complexity, and a vibrancy that distinguishes them from the more succulent 2015 vintage.
