Sylvain Cathiard Vosne Romanee Aux Malconsorts 2017 - 6 Bottles
Introduction
This red wine originates from France, specifically from the prestigious village of Vosne-Romanée within the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy. Domaine Sylvain Cathiard et Fils is a highly regarded family-owned estate currently managed by Sébastien Cathiard, who took over from his father, Sylvain, in 2011. The domaine was established in the 1930s by Sylvain's grandfather, a former worker at the legendary Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Sébastien's winemaking philosophy focuses on meticulous vineyard management and a 'less is more' approach in the cellar, aiming to produce terroir-driven wines with exceptional energy and purity.
Wine Description
Sylvain Cathiard Vosne-Romanee Aux Malconsorts 2017 displays a noble imperial purple colour. The nose is expressive and multifaceted, offering a detailed bouquet of blackberries, briar, cherries, and crushed stone, accented by notes of peony, liquorice, grilled game, and spices. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep, and fleshy, featuring vibrant fruit concentration—more red than black—supported by a broad-shouldered chassis of velvety tannins and excellent fresh acidity. It is characterized by its remarkable grip, backbone, and immense potential, leading into a long, expansive finish with a chiselled edge. This 100% Pinot Noir has an ABV of 13.5% and was matured in approximately 62% new oak barrels. The estate follows organic principles in the vineyard, though it does not hold official certification. The optimal drinking window is estimated from 2024 through 2048.

Food Pairing
The complex structure and savoury, gamey undertones of this Premier Cru Pinot Noir make it an ideal companion for rich, well-prepared meat dishes. It pairs perfectly with roasted or stewed meats such as duck breast, goose, game birds, or beef tournedos Rossini. Its elegant tannic structure and aromatic depth also complement venison, roasted lamb, or medium-aged cheeses.
Vintage Quality
The 2017 vintage in Burgundy is regarded as a 'classic' year, characterized by a hot, dry summer and an early, plentiful harvest that yielded terroir-expressive wines with high aromatic intensity. While the season was meteorologically unconventional, the resulting reds and whites are noted for their vibrancy, finesse, and surprising levels of natural acidity.
