Siro Pacenti bought his estate and planted his first vines in 1970, which still thrive today. The property is north of Montalcino, in Pelagrilli, and overlooks Siena with 22 hectares of Sangiovese in fresh, clay soils. Giancarlo Pacenti took over the winery in 1988 and produced the first Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino the following year. The estate grew to incorporate territory south of Montalcino (Piancornello) in the early 1990s, where Giancarlo's grandfather had planted five hectares of Sangiovese in the 1960s. Pelagrilli, at 350 metres above sea level and the foot of Montalcino Hill, is known for its clay and sandy soils. The wines are refined and fragrant. Vineyards develop in more minerally and pebbly soils on ground rock at Piancornello. The temperature is also hotter here, resulting in more structured, robust wines with Sangiovese's signature sweet, round tannins.

While silky in feel, there's tremendous concentration here, motivated by brisk acids, drenching the palate in tart wild berries and minerals. Grippy tannins linger long, making for a lightly structured and penetrating finale. This full-throttle yet balanced Rosso is showing beautifully.
