La Fiole Cotes du Rhone Villages Reserve 2021
La Fiole Côtes du Rhône Villages Réserve originates from France, within the Southern Rhône region and the Côtes du Rhône Villages AOP. The wine is a distinguished creation of the Brotte family, produced under the 'Père Anselme' signature, which honours Charles Brotte’s grandfather, a respected local winemaker. Founded in 1946, the winery gained global fame in 1952 with the creation of the signature 'La Fiole' twisted bottle—designed by Charles Brotte and ceramist René Contier to mimic the gnarled vines of Provence sculpted by the Mistral wind. The Réserve line was developed to extend this heritage beyond Châteauneuf du Pape, utilising meticulous curation from prime, low-yield sites across esteemed villages such as Cairanne, Laudun, and Vinsobres.
Wine Description
This red wine presents a deep ruby colour and a medium to full body with a caressing, velvety texture. The sensory profile is complex and mature, featuring an aromatic nose of ripe berries, morello cherry, and plums, interwoven with warm spices like cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg. Secondary aromas include truffles, pipe tobacco, leather, and cedar. On the palate, it is rich and fruity, delivering flavours of prunes, mulberries, and balsamic accents alongside notes of salted licorice and coffee. The finish is long, elegant, and racé, supported by a powdery tannin structure.
Varietal Composition: A classic blend typically consisting of approximately 60% Grenache and 30% Syrah, with the remaining 10% comprised of complementary varieties such as Mourvèdre, Cinsault, or Counoise depending on the vintage.
Stylistic Notes: The wine is celebrated for its remarkable concentration and balance; it is aged for 24 months in concrete vats and oak foudres to refine the tannins and develop complexity.
ABV: Recorded between 13.5% and 14.5% depending on the specific bottling.
Organic Status: While the estate focuses on high-quality fruit from selected low-yield sites, this bottling is not typically certified organic.
Food Pairing
The robust presence and spiced fruit profile of this Réserve make it an ideal partner for savoury, hearty dishes.
Meats: Pairs perfectly with grilled ribeye steak, rack of lamb, Peking duck, or slow-cooked braised meats and stews.
Savoury & Rich: Suggested pairings include succulent bean casseroles, ratatouille, or wild game such as venison and caribou.
Cheese & Dessert: Complements mature, aged cheeses and serves as a striking match for dark chocolate fondant.
