Ornellaia Bianco 2021
Ornellaia Bianco is a rare and prestigious white wine from the Bolgheri region of Tuscany, Italy. While the estate is world-famous for its Bordeaux-style reds, Ornellaia Bianco was first released in 2013 with the goal of translating the property's unique maritime terroir into a high-end white wine. Historically a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier, the 2021 vintage marks a significant evolution: it is the first year the wine is 100% Sauvignon Blanc and the first to carry the Bolgheri DOC designation. The estate is owned by the Frescobaldi family, who have maintained its status as a leading 'Super Tuscan' producer.
Wine Description
This wine presents a brilliant straw yellow colour with golden reflections. The 2021 edition is noted for its exceptional textural richness and "broad shoulders" compared to previous vintages. The nose is intense and exotic, offering a complex bouquet of apricot, acacia blossom, and white pear, accented by notes of sage, mint, and roasted hazelnut. On the palate, it is full-bodied and vertical, displaying concentrated flavours of mango, papaya, and citrus zest underpinned by a salty, mineral authority and integrated toastiness.
Accolades
Wine Advocate - 95 points
James Suckling - 97 points
Decanter - 96 points
Food Pairing
It pairs exquisitely with luxury seafood dishes such as caviar, shellfish, or a rich seafood risotto. Its citrus-driven acidity and herbal notes of sage and mint also complement grilled fish like sea bass or gilt-head bream served with herb butter. For vegetable courses, consider asparagus with lemon zest or a wild mushroom risotto. It also stands up well to creamy, soft cheeses like burrata or a well-matured goat cheese.
