Millebuis Pinot Noir 2022

Millebuis Pinot Noir 2022

Millebuis Pinot Noir is a red wine from France, produced in the Côte Chalonnaise subregion of Burgundy. The wine is created by La Cave des Vignerons de Buxy, a cooperative winery established in 1931 by 98 pioneering winegrowers. Today, the cooperative represents 120 winegrowing families. The 'Millebuis' collection, which began in 2014, is made from individual vineyard plots to express the true essence and excellence of the Côte Chalonnaise terroirs. The vineyards are found in the form of small ‘islands’ between Chagny in the north and Saint-Gengoux-le-National in the south, featuring stony, shallow chalky-clay soil rich in limestone.

Wine Description

This 100% Pinot Noir has a deep purple or dark red core with black shaded edges. The aromatic profile is lifted, featuring dark cherry, redcurrant, strawberry, and dried herb notes. Other aromas mentioned across vintages include Morello cherry, liquorice, earth, spicy cedar, and a touch of vanilla.

The wine is medium-bodied to full in the mouth. The palate is full, rich, and well-balanced, with a juicy core of dark cherry and strawberry fruits. It is described as a delectable and expressive wine. The tannins are silky and well-balanced, though sometimes presenting as a touch rustic or chewy with a sturdy structure. The finish is earthy, with notes of vanilla, cedar, and spice. The wine is matured in a combination of new and 5-year-old barrels for 12 months. The ABV is 13.5%. This wine is suitable for drinking now but can be cellared for the next two to four years.

Accolades

  • International Wine Challenge - Redcurrant aromas, fresh strawberry notes on the palate, pine-tannins - well-structured - some finesse on the finish. (2020 vintage)

  • 1001 Dégustations - Gold Medal (2019 vintage)

  • James Suckling - 89 points (2022 vintage)

  • Decanter World Wine Awards - 87 points (2015 vintage)

Food Pairing

This Pinot Noir is a versatile red wine. Its fruit-driven and earthy profile makes it a good match for pizza, pasta, and roasted poultry like chicken or duck. Other suggested pairings include charcuterie, terrines, beef tartare, and fondue bourguignonne. For a more elevated match, consider serving it with chicken or pork in a cherry and port wine pan sauce.

Vintage Quality

The 2022 vintage in Burgundy was considered a 'gift' for winemakers. The favourable weather conditions allowed for a straightforward growing season, enabling winemakers to produce wines of great quality and concentration. The resulting wines are often described as having a good balance of fruit and acidity.
