Matthiasson Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Matthiasson Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Matthiasson Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 originates from the United States, specifically from several cooler vineyard sites throughout the Napa Valley in California. Founded by Steve and Jill Klein Matthiasson in 2003, the winery is a family-run business that has become a pioneer in sustainable and regenerative viticulture. Their winemaking philosophy emphasizes restraint, elegance, and lower alcohol levels, purposefully avoiding the 'bigger is better' style often associated with the region.

Wine Description

This wine exhibits a dark crimson or deep red colour in the glass. The aromatic profile is expressive and refined, featuring bright red fruits like cherry, redcurrant, and cranberry, alongside darker notes of blackberry and mulberry. These fruit scents are framed by mineral and herbal characters, including graphite, cedar, pencil shavings, and a touch of rose petals. On the palate, the wine is vibrant and medium-bodied, delivering a seamless balance of red fruit, forest berries, and subtle roasted black plum. It is characterized by silky, moderate tannins and beautiful acidity that provides energy and a long, fruity finish. The 2019 blend is composed of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 2% Malbec, and 1% Petit Verdot. It was aged for 20 months in mostly used French oak (<20% new) and possesses a modest ABV of 13%. The wine is produced from 100% organically grown grapes.

Food Pairing

The elegant structure and fresh acidity of this Cabernet Sauvignon make it an ideal companion for classic meat dishes such as grilled steak, herb-crusted lamb, or venison. It also pairs well with earthy flavours, including wild mushroom risotto, roasted beets, or dishes seasoned with rosemary and black pepper. For a cheese pairing, consider aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano or Gouda.

Vintage Quality

The 2019 vintage in Napa Valley is celebrated as a stellar and high-quality year characterized by a long, steady growing season. While the year began with heavy winter and spring rains, a temperate summer allowed for long 'hang times' and perfect phenolic ripeness. The resulting wines are noted for their exceptional depth, harmonious balance of fruit intensity, and supple tannins, with some critics observing a 'miraculous' quality to the fruit harvested under ideal autumn conditions.
