Mate Merlot Mantus 2022
Introduction
This expressive red wine originates from Italy, specifically the Tuscany region and the prestigious Montalcino subregion. The Máté family estate is a family-run winery nestled in the Santa Restituta area, situated on land that served as a Roman vineyard 2,000 years ago. Owned by author Ferenc Máté and his wife, artist and winemaker Candace Máté, the couple restored a 13th-century friary and transformed the surrounding 17 acres into an organic vineyard. The winery's philosophy emphasizes small-lot, organic viticulture with high-density planting to produce wines that authentically reflect the diverse, mineral-rich terroir of their private hills.
Wine Description
The 2022 Máté 'Mantus' Merlot presents a concentrated ruby colour in the glass. The sensory profile is plush and complex, offering territory-driven aromas of minerals, blackberry, and plum preserves, layered with hints of smoky wood, liquorice, and chocolate. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and mouth-coating, featuring a juicy core of dark fruit, cocoa, and baking spice.
This 100% Merlot is sourced from the estate's sandy-clay soils and is fermented with indigenous yeasts before aging for 18 months in French oak barrels. Stylistically, it is characterized by its firm, chalky tannins and a remarkable structural density that balances its natural opulence. The finish is long, harmonious, and aromatic, often described as 'near endless'. While enjoyable upon release, this well-integrated red has an optimal drinking window extending through 2032.
