La Soufrandiere Pouilly-Vinzelles 2023
La Soufrandière Pouilly-Vinzelles 2023 is a premium white Burgundy from the Mâconnais region of France. The estate, located in the village of Vinzelles, was acquired by the Bret family in 1947 and is currently managed by third-generation brothers Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume Bret. Their winemaking philosophy is centered on deep respect for the land, having transitioned the 12-hectare estate to full biodynamic and organic farming in 2000. The brothers are pioneers of high-quality viticulture in southern Burgundy, focusing on revealing the unique mineral identity of their limestone-rich terroirs.
Wine Description
This 100% Chardonnay is a blend from young vines (23 to 48 years old) located in the prized 'Les Quarts' parcel.
Colour: The wine displays a pale lemon or straw yellow colour with bright reflections.
Aroma: The nose is seductive and fragrant, offering aromas of almond, white flowers, citrus confit, and white peach.
Palate: On the palate, the wine is generous and rounded yet maintains a zesty, energetic 'bounce'. It features flavours of ripe yellow fruits, fresh pear, and carambola.
Body and Finish: It is medium-bodied with an appealing, silky texture and a long, persistent finish characterized by saline minerals and limestone tension.
Technical Details: The grapes are hand-picked and whole-cluster pressed; the 2023 vintage was vinified under the 'Zen' regime with minimal sulfur additions. The wine typically possesses an ABV of 13% to 13.5% and is aged for 11 months, with 80% in stainless steel tanks and 20% in used 228-litre oak barrels. The estate is certified organic by Ecocert and biodynamic by Demeter.
Food Pairing
The balance of creaminess and mineral tension in this wine makes it a versatile companion for sophisticated cuisine:
Seafood: It pairs perfectly with pan-fried monkfish, gratin of scallops, Mediterranean prawn brochettes, and shellfish.
Poultry and Meat: Suggested pairings include butter chicken with fenugreek or Lyon andouillette.
Vegetarian and Cheese: It complements cauliflower tabbouleh with apples and nuts, as well as creamy preparations of goat's cheese.
