La Monacesca Verdicchio Di Matelica 2022
Introduction
Produced in Italy, this distinguished white wine originates from the Marche region, specifically within the Verdicchio di Matelica subregion. The estate, located in the municipality of Matelica, derives its name from a 10th-century settlement of Benedictine monks who fled Longobard persecutions to build a monastery and church on these lands. In 1966, Casimiro Cifola purchased the property and established the winery, a legacy now carried on by his son, Aldo Cifola. The winery's philosophy is rooted in a deep respect for the Verdicchio grape, opting out of barrel aging to ensure that the pure quality and characteristics of the fruit remain the central focus.
Wine Description
This wine presents a bright straw yellow colour, often accompanied by elegant greenish reflections. The aromatic profile is complex and refined, offering a bouquet of white flowers, lime, yellow apple, and wild herbs, with deeper nuances of anise, cedar, and dried fruit as it breathes. On the palate, it is powerful and full-bodied yet remarkably well-balanced, delivering flavours of citrus, white cherry, and almond skin. It possesses a lively acidity and a pronounced mineral depth, leading to a long, persistent finish characterized by a fine almond note and a distinct chalky edge that reflects the limestone-rich soils of the Matelica Valley.
Crafted from 100% Verdicchio, the wine is celebrated for its precise varietal expression and structural richness. While it is fresh and energetic enough for immediate enjoyment, its robust body and acidity allow it to age gracefully in the cellar for several years.
