Kaiken Malbec Ultra 2021
This Argentine Malbec achieved significant global recognition after being named #30 on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of 2024, a prestigious list released in late 2023.
Kaiken Malbec Ultra 2021 originates from Argentina, specifically within the Mendoza region and the renowned Uco Valley. Founded in 2001 by Chilean winemaker Aurelio Montes, the winery takes its name from the 'Caiquén', a wild goose that flies across the Andes between Chile and Argentina, reflecting the founder's own journey to rediscover Mendoza's terroir. The estate follows a philosophy of innovation and sustainability, utilizing biodynamic practices to produce wines that genuinely express the high-altitude attributes of their specific vineyard sites.
Wine Description
This red wine presents an intense, bright red colour with deep violet and blue hues. The sensory profile is highly expressive, featuring an aromatic nose of blueberry, ripe plum, and blackberries, elegantly intertwined with floral notes of violet and lavender and spicy hints of black pepper, clove, and rosemary. On the full-bodied palate, it offers a smooth and silky entry with rounded, well-integrated tannins and a refreshing acidity. The structure is defined by a 'gravelly' texture and mineral undertones, leading to a long, persistent finish with subtle notes of licorice, dark chocolate, and black tea.
Varietal Composition: 100% Malbec.
ABV: 14.5%.
Organic and Sustainable Status: The winery focuses on sustainability and biodynamics; this wine is certified vegan and is produced using sustainable viticulture.
Stylistic Notes: Grapes are sourced from three distinct Uco Valley terroirs—Los Chacayes, Altamira, and Gualtallary—and the wine is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels (one-third new) followed by six months in bottle before release.
