Joseph Drouhin Clos des Mouches Rouge Premier Cru 2023

Joseph Drouhin Clos des Mouches Rouge Premier Cru 2023

Introduction

Joseph Drouhin Clos des Mouches Rouge Premier Cru is a red wine from France, produced in the Burgundy region and the Beaune Premier Cru appellation. The Joseph Drouhin house was founded in 1880, and is owned and run by the fourth generation of the Drouhin family. 'Clos des Mouches' is one of Burgundy's most revered vineyards, acquired by Maurice Drouhin in 1921, and is effectively a monopole (meaning the Domaine owns a vast majority of the plot). The winery's philosophy is centred on a dedication to terroir, expressed through organic and biodynamic farming.

Wine Description

The wine is 100% Pinot Noir. It typically has a beautiful, luminous, ruby red colour. The aromatic profile is complex and refined, showing aromas of red berries, particularly cherry and raspberry, that evolve into earthy, forest floor, and spicy notes. Further aromas include rose petal and black fruit.

It is a medium bodied wine. On the palate, it is elegant, silky, and harmonious, offering concentrated fruit flavours balanced by a fine structure and lovely acidity. The tannins are fine and well integrated. Stylistically, it is a magnificent and intense wine that is built for ageing, possessing both richness and finesse. It is aged in French oak barrels (20% new) for 14 to 18 months. The finish is long, complex, and persistent. The ABV is 13.5%. The optimal drinking window is to age for 5 to 10 years, and it can keep for up to 30 years. The vineyards are farmed using organic and biodynamic practices.
