Evesham Wood Blanc du Puit Sec 2023
This unique white blend comes from the Eola-Amity Hills AVA within Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Evesham Wood, founded in 1986 by Russ Raney and now owned by his longtime apprentice Erin Nuccio, is one of the region’s most respected boutique wineries. The Blanc du Puits Sec (which translates to "White of the Dry Well") is a field blend sourced from the estate’s original 1986 plantings at the Le Puits Sec vineyard. The winery is a pioneer in organic viticulture and dry-farming, and this specific bottling is highly regarded for its texture and old-vine complexity.
Wine Description
The Evesham Wood Blanc du Puits Sec 2023 is an aromatic, savory, and richly textured white wine that balances exotic aromatics with a bright, structural core.
Appearance: Clear, pale straw with golden highlights.
Nose: Fruited and savory, featuring a complex bouquet of jasmine, honeysuckle, and rose petals, layered with notes of Granny Smith apples, Asian pears, and tangerines. There is a distinct savory element often described as lanolin or flint.
Palate: The mouthfeel is round and expansive, owing to barrel fermentation. It delivers flavors of yellow plums and peach skin, accented by almond nougat and a touch of honey. This richness is perfectly balanced by a "tangy" and "zesty" acidity that provides a linear, clean finish.
Technical Details: The 2023 blend is primarily 85% Pinot Gris and 15% Gewürztraminer, with trace amounts of Pinot Blanc, Kerner, and Rieslaner. The fruit comes from 1986-planted vines on their own rootstocks. The wine is co-fermented in neutral French oak barrels using native yeasts and undergoes spontaneous malolactic conversion. The alcohol content is approximately 12.5% ABV.
