Domaine Michel Gros Clos Vougeot 'Grand Maupertuis' Grand Cru 2022

Domaine Michel Gros Clos Vougeot 'Grand Maupertuis' Grand Cru 2022

Domaine Michel Gros, established in 1830 in Vosne-Romanée, France, is a family-run estate now helmed by sixth-generation winemaker Michel Gros. The domaine is celebrated for its meticulous vineyard management and traditional Burgundian winemaking techniques, producing wines that capture the essence of their prestigious terroirs. The Clos de Vougeot 'Grand Maupertuis' comes from a highly regarded 0.20-hectare parcel within the famed Grand Cru vineyard, delivering wines of depth, structure, and longevity.

Wine Description

This Pinot Noir displays a deep ruby hue, indicating its richness and concentration. The aromatic profile is complex, with layers of black cherry, red plum, and delicate floral notes, interwoven with earthy undertones and a hint of menthol. The palate is medium-bodied yet powerful, showcasing dark currant and plum flavours alongside refined tannins and a distinct mineral streak. Aged in 100% new oak, this wine gains additional structure and depth, leading to a robust, compact finish. While it can be enjoyed in its youth, optimal drinking will begin after 5-6 years of cellaring, allowing the wine to reveal its full complexity.

Accolades

  • Neal Martin, Vinous – 91-93 points

Food Pairing

This wine pairs beautifully with rich dishes such as beef tenderloin, duck confit, or venison stew. The depth and structure of the wine complement the savoury intensity of these dishes, enhancing the overall dining experience.

Vintage Quality

The 2022 vintage in Burgundy saw a cool early spring, resulting in a gradual start to the growing season. A rise in temperatures from mid-April encouraged strong vine growth, while timely June rains alleviated early drought concerns and ensured a healthy fruit set. The summer was marked by hot and dry conditions, leading to an early harvest that began on September 3rd. The grapes achieved excellent ripeness and balance, promising wines with remarkable depth, freshness, and aging potential.
