Charles Heidsieck Cuvee Champagne Charlie

Charles Heidsieck Cuvee Champagne Charlie

Introduction

This prestige cuvée originates from France, produced in the Champagne region by the historic Maison Charles Heidsieck. Founded in 1851 by Charles-Camille Heidsieck—the original 'Champagne Charlie'—the house is renowned for its deep, cathedral-like chalk cellars (crayères) that date back to the 3rd century. The 'Champagne Charlie' cuvée was first created in the 1970s as a tribute to the founder's audacious spirit, with only five historic vintages released between 1979 and 1985. After a 37-year hiatus, the house officially revived this legendary label in 2022 to celebrate the bicentennial of its founder's birth.

Wine Description

The modern rebirth of Champagne Charlie is a multi-vintage blend that emphasizes the 'Charles spirit' through a high proportion of mature reserve wines. The wine displays a luminous golden robe with an extremely fine and persistent mousse. The nose is opulent and complex, offering aromas of grapefruit, roasted pineapple, and fresh peach, layered with persistent pastry notes, vanilla blossom, and exotic spices. On the palate, it is full-bodied and structured, blending juvenile freshness with a mature silkiness and a 'dry fleshiness'. It is characterized by a long finish featuring nuances of candied citrus, liquorice, and bitter orange. The varietal composition for the most recent releases typically consists of approximately 52% to 66% Chardonnay and 34% to 48% Pinot Noir. The ABV is 12%, and while the house achieved B Corp Certification in 2022 for its sustainable practices, the wine is not certified organic.

Food Pairing

The intense structure and aromatic depth of Champagne Charlie make it a versatile partner for high-end gastronomy. It pairs perfectly with rich seafood dishes, such as monkfish à la meunière or shellfish with brown butter sauce. Its mature silkiness also complements roasted poultry, duck charcuterie, or a flatiron steak served with pomme frites. For a refined pairing, consider serving it with creamy desserts featuring ginger or roasted strawberries.
