Catena Zapata Adrianna Vineyard 'River' Malbec 2020

Catena Zapata Adrianna Vineyard 'River' Malbec 2020

Introduction

This red wine originates from Argentina, specifically from the Gualtallary district of the Uco Valley within the Mendoza region. Founded in 1902 by Italian immigrant Nicola Catena, Catena Zapata is Argentina's oldest winery still managed by its founding family, now led by fourth generation vintner Dr. Laura Catena. The winery's philosophy is defined by its pioneering role in high altitude viticulture and the discovery of extreme terroirs like the Adrianna Vineyard, which is situated at an elevation of 1,450 metres and is often described as the 'Grand Cru' of South America.

Wine Description

Catena Zapata Adrianna Vineyard 'River' Malbec 2020 displays a glistening dark purple colour that is almost black at the centre with ruby flashes at the edge. The nose is exuberant and complex, offering aromas of blackberries, cassis, and sour cherry layered with floral scents of violets and rose hips, alongside aromatic suggestions of black licorice, chocolate, and a spicy twist of curry. On the palate, the wine is full bodied yet elegant, delivering a creamy and lush texture that balances polished tannins with a stony, saline undercurrent. It is characterized by its remarkable freshness, chalky minerality, and a long, persistent finish. This 100% Malbec features an ABV of 14% and is produced from the Adrianna Vineyard, which is certified organic. The optimal drinking window is from 2026 through 2035.

Accolades

  • Wine Advocate - 97+ points.

  • James Suckling - 98 points.

  • Vinous - 97 points.

  • Tim Atkin - 96 points.

  • Wine Enthusiast - 95 points.

  • Wine Spectator - 93 points.

Food Pairing

The structured tannins and intense minerality of this Malbec make it an ideal companion for high quality proteins and savoury dishes. It pairs perfectly with well marbled grilled steaks, traditional Argentine asado, or hearty meat stews like Carbonada Criolla. Its floral and spicy notes also complement red pasta dishes, gourmet burgers with blue cheese, and aged, full flavoured cheeses.

Vintage Quality

The 2020 vintage in Argentina was exceptionally good but challenging, marked by a dry winter and a hot summer that led to a historically early harvest. While the lack of water reduced yields, the high altitude of the Gualtallary vineyards helped preserve essential acidity and freshness, resulting in boldly coloured reds with excellent balance and fruit character.
