Catena Appellation Paraje Altamira Malbec 2022

Catena Appellation Paraje Altamira Malbec 2022

This red wine originates from Argentina, specifically from the prestigious Paraje Altamira district in the Uco Valley, Mendoza. Produced by Bodega Catena Zapata, a family-owned estate founded in 1902 by Italian immigrant Nicola Catena, the winery is celebrated for its pioneering work in high-altitude viticulture. The "Appellation" range is inspired by the French village-wine concept, focusing on the distinct terroir of specific sites; here, the high-altitude (1,095m) chalky soils of Altamira are the focal point.

Wine Description

Catena Appellation Paraje Altamira Malbec 2022 displays an intense purple hue. The nose is expressive and highly aromatic, offering scents of ripe blackberries, blueberries, and red plums layered with floral notes of lavender, violets, and a hint of orange peel or balsam. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied and well-structured, featuring an elegant, "chalky" texture that is characteristic of the Altamira terroir. It is characterized by its fresh acidity, silky tannins, and flavours of dark berries, fine spices, and a touch of cocoa leading to a dry, mineral-inflected finish. This 100% Malbec has an ABV of 13.2% to 13.5% and was aged for 6 to 13 months in French oak barrels (25% to 40% new). While the winery is a champion of sustainable farming, this specific bottling is not certified organic. The optimal drinking window is from release through 2032.

Accolades

  • Vinous (Joaquín Hidalgo) - 92 points.

  • James Suckling - 92 points.

  • Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - 92 points.

Food Pairing

The fresh acidity and elegant, chalky structure of this Malbec make it a sophisticated partner for a wide range of proteins. It pairs perfectly with leaner cuts of grilled red meat such as sirloin or flank steak, as well as roast chicken or turkey with savory herbs. Its spicy and floral undertones also complement meat pot pies, lamb chops with mint, and dishes featuring earthy mushrooms or roasted peppers. For a cheese course, it is an exceptional match for blue cheeses like Gorgonzola or pungent varieties like Manchego and aged Cheddar.
