Castello di Montepo Fontecanese 2020

Castello di Montepo Fontecanese 2020

Introduction

This rare and ambitious red wine originates from the Castello di Montepò estate in the Maremma region of Tuscany, the private domain of Jacopo Biondi Santi. Distinct from the family's Sangiovese-focused legacy, Fontecanese is Jacopo’s challenge to the world of international varietals, a "Cru" conceived to be one of Italy's premier expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is sourced exclusively from a tiny, distinct vineyard plot rich in galestro (rocky, schistous clay) located between 357 and 377 meters above sea level. Selected after years of meticulous micro-zonation studies for its unique exposure and soil composition, this site yields fruit of extraordinary concentration and character. It represents a "Super Tuscan" of purity and precision, showcasing how the rugged Maremma terroir can transform a noble French grape into a distinctly Italian masterpiece.

Wine Description

Castello di Montepò Fontecanese 2020 displays a deep, impenetrable ruby colour with youthful purple nuances. The nose is profound and aromatic, characterized by a dazzling interplay of ripe blackberries, raspberries, and dark plums, interwoven with high-toned herbal notes that "crackle with vibrancy." As it opens, it reveals complex layers of cedarwood, dark chocolate, black truffle, and a sophisticated hint of black tea or tarragon. On the palate, the wine is medium-to-full bodied and defined by remarkable compactness and tension. It offers a core of juicy, vivid fruit that balances a natural sweetness with a savory, saline undercurrent. The tannins are "chiseled" and architectural, firm yet ultra-fine, leading to a very long, structured finish. This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon undergoes native yeast fermentation and is aged for 24 months in French oak barriques, followed by roughly 16 months of bottle refinement. The optimal drinking window is from release through the next 20+ years.

Accolades

The 2020 vintage of Fontecanese has received extraordinary critical acclaim, marking it as a benchmark year for this label. It was awarded a perfect 100 Points by Jonathan Cristaldi for The Tasting Panel, who described it as having "power and precision on display throughout." Additionally, it has garnered high praise from Decanter, receiving 96 Points, with critics noting its complexity and "Tuscan light" that shoots through the Cabernet profile.
