Alois Lageder Pinot Noir 'Krafuss' 2021
This refined and "contemplative" red wine originates from Italy, specifically from the Krafuss estate in the village of Appiano, within the Alto Adige DOC (South Tyrol). The Krafuss vineyard is one of Alois Lageder’s prestigious "Crus," perched on a southeast-facing hilltop at elevations between 430 and 450 meters. In 1991, the estate transformed this historic site; which dates back to the Middle Ages, into a dedicated Pinot Noir vineyard planted with high-density clones on morainic soils composed of clay, rocks, and limestone. The winery's philosophy follows strict Demeter-certified biodynamic principles, aiming to capture the "dynamic tension" and alpine flair of this unique high-altitude terroir.
Wine Description
Alois Lageder Krafuss Pinot Noir presents a brilliant garnet hue with ruby shimmers. The sensory profile is complex and "restrained," featuring an aromatic nose of earthy strawberries, wild berries, and cherries, layered with sophisticated notes of violets, blood orange, pepper, and flint. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied and "silky," showcasing a vibrant energy with flavours of peach tea, cinnamon, and smoky nuances. It is characterized by its elegant tannins and a wonderfully pronounced salty tension that leads to a long, mineral-laden finish. This 100% Pinot Noir reached an ABV of 13% to 14% and was matured for 18 months in French oak barriques and puncheons (1/3 new) after spontaneous fermentation.
