Wirra Wirra RSW Shiraz 2019
Introduction
Wirra Wirra RSW Shiraz is a flagship red wine from the McLaren Vale region in South Australia. The winery was originally established in 1894 by Robert Strangways Wigley, a former state cricketer and colourful local figure, whose initials 'RSW' give the wine its name. After falling into ruin for decades, the estate was rebuilt in 1969 by Greg Trott, who transformed it into one of Australia's most respected biodynamic producers. The winemaking philosophy today combines this rich history with a commitment to sustainable, high quality viticulture aimed at expressing the unique ironstone soils of the region.
Wine Description
This wine exhibits a deep, dense crimson colour with bright scarlet clarity at the rim. The sensory profile is powerful and luxurious, offering a bouquet of dark plum, blackberry, and red berries intertwined with musky florals, mocha, and sweet baking spices like cinnamon and clove. On the palate, it is full bodied and opulent, featuring concentrated black fruit, dark chocolate, and espresso. The structure is defined by velvety fruit tannins and fine grained French oak, balanced by vibrant acidity and a long, savoury, mineral finish. This 100% Shiraz is sourced from low yielding old vines and matured for approximately 18 months in premium French oak, with one third being new barrels. It has an ABV of 14.5% and an optimal drinking window extending up to 25 years from release. Since 2014, the estate has been certified biodynamic.
