The Kujira 10 Year Old Bourbon Barrel

The Kujira 10 Year Old Bourbon Barrel

Introduction

Kujira 10 Year Old Ryukyu Whisky is a premium single grain whisky from the country of Japan, specifically the subtropical island of Okinawa. It is produced by the Masahiro Distillery, which was founded in 1883 and is one of the oldest and largest distilleries in the Ryukyu Islands. This expression is distilled from 100% premium Indica rice and utilizes Okinawa's unique black koji for fermentation. The warm and humid climate of the region significantly accelerates the maturation process, resulting in a rounded body and deep amber hue. While many expressions are matured in virgin white oak, this specific version is matured for over 10 years in ex-bourbon barrels.

Spirit Description

The Kujira 10 Year Old Bourbon Barrel is characterized by its smooth, buttery, and spicy profile, drawing significant influence from its decade of maturation in bourbon casks.

  • Colour: Deep amber.

  • Aroma: The nose is fresh and sweet, featuring scents of nectar, honey, and brown sugar accompanied by floral notes and soft oaky aromas. Spices such as cinnamon and cloves provide a sapwood-like quality reminiscent of bourbon.

  • Palate: It offers a sweet and buttery mouthfeel with flavours of soft caramel sauce, baked bread, and liquorice. The taste is enriched by charming spices such as cloves and cinnamon, with additional hints of green raisins and dates.

  • Finish: A good length with a slight pleasant bitterness that balances the sweetness. Persistent notes of green raisins and liquorice are followed by a long, warming finish of spices.

  • ABV: Bottled at 43% ABV.

Accolades

The Kujira 10 Year Old range has received several prestigious international awards for its quality and innovative production methods:

  • Double Gold Medal: San Francisco World Spirits Competition (2021).

  • Silver Medal (91 points): International Wine & Spirit Competition (2021).

  • Silver Medal: International Spirit Challenge (2020 and 2023).
