Taylor Fladgate Victory Port 80 Year Old Tawny

Taylor Fladgate Victory Port 80 Year Old Tawny

Introduction

Taylor Fladgate Victory Port 80 Year Tawny is a fortified wine from Portugal, produced in the Douro region and the Port appellation. Taylor Fladgate, founded in 1692, is a highly respected, family owned Portuguese Port house. The winery's expertise lies in its Portos aged in artisanal oak casks in its historic Oporto cellars. This limited edition 'Victory Port' was released to mark the 80th anniversary of victory in the Second World War and is the first bottling under the newly created 80 Year Old Tawny Port category.

Wine Description

The wine has a rich mahogany hue, fading to copper gold on the rim, and may have a glint of red grading to amber tawny on the rim. The aromatic profile is superb and heady, featuring a wave of rum and raisin, molasses, and caramel. These are overlaid with notes of coffee beans, golden sultanas, sweet cigar leaf, an elegant nuttiness, and the subtle scent of fine oak. It is made from a Port Blend Red of traditional grape varieties.

The wine is full bodied. The palate is smooth and velvety, with flavours of nutmeg, gingerbread, anise, quince, black pepper, rich figgy plum pudding, and confit apricot. The complexity of the wood aged flavours keeps the sweetness moderate. Stylistically, it is a rare Tawny Port of exceptional quality, embodying the pinnacle of Taylor Fladgate's craftsmanship. The wine is in perfect balance with sweetness, lifted by a crisp acidity that gives it an attractive freshness and elegance. The finish is immensely long, finely constituted, and wonderfully balanced, with incredible depth and layers of complexity. The Port is ready to drink and does not require decanting. The ABV is 20%. Information on the organic status of the wine is not available in the sources.
