Shinobu 15 Year Old Pure Malt Japanese Whisky

Shinobu 15 Year Old Pure Malt Japanese Whisky

Shinobu 15 Year Old Pure Malt is a complex blended malt produced by the Shinobu Distillery in Niigata, Japan. The distillery was founded by Mr. Ken Usami, who also established the Niigata Beer company. In line with the transparent "World Malt" category, this expression is a "pure malt" (or blended malt), consisting of high-quality whiskies sourced from around the world—primarily Scotland—which are then married and aged for 15 years in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. The hallmark of the Shinobu range is the final maturation period in precious Japanese Mizunara oak, which takes place in the seaside environment of Niigata, imbuing the spirit with a distinct oriental elegance.

Spirit Description

This whisky displays a rich amber gold colour. The nose is deep and aromatic, featuring a complex blend of salted caramel, old leather, and campfire embers, followed by sweeter notes of maltose, blueberry cheesecake, and old oak. On the palate, the body is oily and mouth-filling, delivering a balanced profile of ripe orchard fruits, lemon zest, and milk coffee, underpinned by the spicy influence of the Mizunara oak. Flavours of ginger root, cinnamon sticks, and dark chocolate-covered espresso beans provide a sophisticated depth. The finish is long and drying, characterized by persistent oakiness, floral woody scents, and a touch of sweet malted barley. It is bottled at 43% ABV with no added colouring.
