Cave de Saumur 'Les Pouches' Chenin Blanc 2024

Cave de Saumur 'Les Pouches' Chenin Blanc 2024

Saumur Les Pouches White is a refined expression of the Loire Valley in France, specifically originating from the 'Les Pouches' lieu-dit in the commune of Montreuil-Bellay. This wine is produced by the Cave de Saumur, a pioneering co-operative established in 1957 that represents 160 families dedicated to quality-focused viticulture. The vineyard site has historical significance dating back to the Middle Ages, with its limestone rocks having been quarried to build the nearby fortified castle of Montreuil-Bellay.

Wine Description

This 100% Chenin Blanc presents a pale gold colour often accented by green or silver highlights. The sensory profile is intense and expressive, featuring a 'suave' nose of white peach, William pear, and nectarine, complemented by floral notes of acacia-lime and a distinct flinty minerality. On the palate, the wine is bone-dry with a round attack and a lively, mouthwatering acidity that leads into citrus flavours of grapefruit and lemon. The wine typically has an alcohol content ranging from 11.5% to 13.5% ABV. While not universally certified organic, the co-operative practices sustainable viticulture, including planting flowers among the vines to reduce pesticide use and conserve biodiversity.

Food Pairing

The vibrant acidity and mineral core of this Chenin Blanc make it an ideal accompaniment for fresh seafood, including oysters, grilled sardines, and seafood platters. It pairs elegantly with flakey white fish served in cream sauces, poached trout with beurre blanc, or roast duck with peaches. Additionally, it is a classic match for fresh goat's cheese (chèvre) and can stand up to the heat of spicy Asian dishes.
