Montes Purple Angel 2020 - 1.5 Litre Bottle
This red wine originates from Chile, specifically from the Apalta and Marchigüe subregions within the Colchagua Valley. Viña Montes was founded in 1987 by a visionary quartet including Aurelio Montes, who is widely credited with pioneering Chile's quality revolution and elevating Carmenère to international acclaim. The winery's philosophy emphasizes a 'pre industrial' approach and 'sustainable dry farming,' allowing the unique granite and clay soils of their estate vineyards to produce fruit with exceptional concentration.
Wine Description
Montes Purple Angel 2020 displays an impressive deep purplish red colour with garnet reflections. The nose is intense and sun kissed, offering outstanding aromas of ripe blackberry, plum, and blueberry jam layered with notes of sweet spices, dark chocolate, mocha, and a balsamic backdrop. On the palate, the wine is full bodied and voluminous, featuring a juicy flow and soft, ample tannins that provide a luxurious and well structured foundation. It is characterized by its remarkable complexity and freshness, leading to an elegant, long finish with hints of toasted nuts and sweet spice. This blend consists of 92% Carmenère and 8% Petit Verdot, with 70% of the wine aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels. The ABV is 14.5%. While Montes follows rigorous sustainable practices, including the use of grazing animals to manage weeds, this bottling is not certified organic. The optimal drinking window is from 2025 through 2040.

Food Pairing
The bold structure and opulent fruit of this Carmenère blend make it an ideal companion for rich and savoury meat dishes. It pairs perfectly with roast lamb seasoned with rosemary, grilled beef tenderloin, or barbecue pork ribs. Its spicy and chocolatey undertones also complement game meats, wild mushroom risotto, or pasta dishes like cannelloni. For a cheese pairing, consider a mature blue cheese or a hard, aged cheddar.
Vintage Quality
The 2020 vintage in the Colchagua Valley was characterized by a warm year that resulted in low yields and highly concentrated berries. Despite the heat, the controlled water stress and the winemaker's skill in managing extraction produced a wine that maintains a remarkable balance of energy and sweetness.
