Michter's US*1 Small Batch Sour Mash

Michter's US*1 Small Batch Sour Mash

Michter's US*1 Small Batch Sour Mash Whiskey is an American whiskey with roots tracing back to the country of the United States. The Michter's legacy originates from Shenk's Distillery, founded by a Swiss Mennonite farmer in Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania, in 1753, which is considered America's first whiskey company. Michter's Original Sour Mash was the distillery's most popular product during the 1970s and 1980s but disappeared from the market in 1989. It was triumphantly reintroduced in 2012 as part of the US*1 line, staying true to the profile of its predecessor. Today, Michter's is based in Kentucky, in the heart of the modern American whiskey industry. The US*1 expressions are named to honour the brand's heritage harkening back to America's first whiskey company.

Spirit Description

Michter's US*1 Small Batch Sour Mash Whiskey is made using a unique grain selection that prevents it from being categorised as either a bourbon or a rye. Its unusual mash bill likely has less than the 51% corn required to be called bourbon, but includes a fair amount of corn, rye grain, and some barley malt. The 'Sour Mash' moniker refers to the production process where a portion of previously fermented mash is used as a starter for the new mash. This small-batch whiskey is aged in fire-charred, new American white oak barrels. The colour is copper. On the nose, it offers scents of warm toasted burnt sugar, spice, sweet fruit, candied cherries, and honeyed vanilla, with aromas of marshmallows, oak, and cinnamon. The palate is silky, smooth, and sweet with flavours of caramel, vanilla, toffee, coffee cake, and stone fruit. It is often described as starting like a bourbon and finishing like a rye. The finish is clean, with a mild heat and a spicy rye and black pepper presence that lingers. It is bottled at 86 proof, or $43\%$ Alcohol by Volume (ABV).

Accolades

This whiskey has received high praise, including being named 'Whisky Of The Year' for 2019 by The Whisky Exchange. This distinction made Michter's US*1 Sour Mash the first whiskey made in the United States to ever achieve this honour.

Food Pairing

The whiskey's balance of sweetness and spice makes it an excellent base for classic whiskey cocktails like an Old Fashioned or a Manhattan. Its silky smooth texture and intricate flavours also make it perfect for sipping neat or on the rocks. For pairing with food, its rich profile is complemented by smoked meats, dark chocolate, or aged cheeses.
