Mer Soleil Chardonnay Reserve 2023 (By Caymus)
This rich and 'dramatic' white wine originates from the United States, specifically from the Santa Lucia Highlands subregion of Monterey County in California. Founded in 1988 by Chuck Wagner of Caymus Vineyards, Mer Soleil was one of the pioneering estates in a region previously dedicated to cattle grazing and row crops. Since 2001, the winery has been led by Chuck's son, winemaker Charlie Wagner, whose philosophy focuses on utilizing the area's extreme coastal conditions, intense sunlight and cooling Pacific breezes, to foster a longer growing season and greater varietal complexity.
Wine Description
The Mer Soleil Chardonnay Reserve presents a clear and golden yellow colour. The sensory profile is highly expressive, featuring a nose of Meyer lemon curd, honeysuckle, and lemon blossoms infused with the warmth of vanilla and a hint of sea breeze. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, round, and 'lush', showcasing flavours of ripe peach, lemon meringue pie, Anjou pear, and tropical notes of mango and pineapple. It is characterized by a creamy, silky texture and integrated medium acidity that balances its rich mouthfeel. The finish is dry and refreshing, with lingering impressions of toasted almonds, custard, and a subtle touch of oak. This 100% Chardonnay reached an alcohol content (ABV) of 14.5% and was matured for 12 to 15 months in French oak barrels to achieve its signature unctuosity. While the Wagner family emphasizes sustainable vineyard practices, this wine is not officially certified organic.
