Matsui Kurayoshi Pure Malt 12 Year Old
Matsui Kurayoshi 12 Year Old is a premium blended malt produced by the Matsui Shuzou distillery in the Tottori Prefecture, Japan. Established in 1910, the distillery is located near Mount Daisen, drawing on the mountain's volcanic-rock-filtered spring water to achieve its signature clean profile. In line with the "World Malt" tradition, this expression is a blend of malt whiskies sourced from Scotland and Japan, which are then married and aged for at least 12 years in ex-bourbon white oak barrels. This long maturation in the varied climate of the Sea of Japan coast allows the spirit to develop a depth and complexity that belies its "pure malt" classification.
Whisky Description
This whisky presents a rich golden amber colour. The nose is fragrant and multi-layered, featuring flamed orange peel, lemongrass, and toasted almonds, with a soft undertone of rye bread. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and well-balanced; an initial burst of aromatic barley and floral notes evolves into a fruity core of red apple, white grape, and dried raisins. The oak influence is evident through smooth vanilla and hazelnut flavours, accented by a very faint, wispy hint of smoke. The finish is long and elegant, leaving behind a refreshing trail of lime, ginger spice, and a touch of dark cocoa. It is bottled at 43% ABV (or 46% in certain markets) and is non-chill filtered to preserve its natural oils.
