Marani Khvanchkara
Introduction
This red wine originates from Georgia, specifically from the Khvanchkara micro zone within the Racha region. Produced by Telavi Wine Cellar under the Marani brand, the winery was established in 1915 near the city of Telavi in Kakheti. The winery's philosophy is rooted in a century of tradition, seamlessly intertwining historical Rachan winemaking techniques with modern innovation to showcase the diversity of indigenous Georgian grape varieties.
Wine Description
Marani Khvanchkara displays a light ruby or burgundy colour. The nose is aromatic and complex, offering a penetrating attack of raspberry and strawberry aromas layered with notes of roasted almonds and a hint of juniper or pine cones. On the palate, the wine is soft and concentrated, featuring a velvety texture with dominant flavours of wild strawberry and sweet cherries balanced by a fresh, slightly sour finish. It is characterized by its natural semi sweet character, which is achieved by using late-harvest grapes that are fermented in stainless steel until the desired balance of sugar and acidity is reached. This wine is a traditional blend of the indigenous Aleksandrouli and Mujuretuli grape varieties, typically reaching an ABV of 11% to 11.5%. While the winery utilizes sustainable methods and respects natural processes, this specific bottling is not certified organic. The optimal drinking window is from release through three to five years to best enjoy its fresh berry profile.
Food Pairing
The natural sweetness and vibrant fruit profile of this Khvanchkara make it an ideal partner for a variety of desserts and savoury dishes. It pairs perfectly with fruit salads, cherry tarts, and soft cheeses such as Brie or Camembert. Its berry notes and balanced acidity also complement red meats, poultry, and fresh salads. For the best experience, it is recommended to serve this wine slightly chilled at a temperature of 11°C to 13°C.
