Quinta das Maias Tinto 2022
Introduction
This red wine originates from Portugal, specifically from the Dão region within the foothills of the Serra da Estrela mountain range. Established in 1893, Quinta das Maias is named after the 'Maias', the local name for the yellow Weaver's Broom plant that blankets the estate's slopes. The winery is under the same ownership as the renowned Quinta dos Roques and is led by winemaker Luis Lourenço, who is considered a pioneer in the Dão. The estate's philosophy focuses on capturing the distinct high-altitude terroir through minimal intervention and traditional winemaking practices.
Wine Description
Quinta das Maias Tinto displays a deep, brilliant ruby red colour. The nose is spicy and aromatic, offering an intense bouquet of black fruits such as blackberries, prunes, and cassis, layered with notes of violets, licorice, and vanilla derived from its time in oak. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and robust, featuring a supple texture and a dense core of blackcurrant and sloe flavours. It is characterized by its fresh acidity, elegant tannins, and a long, savoury finish that reflects the estate's granitic soils. This blend is typically composed of Jaen (known as Mencia in Spain), Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, and Tinta Roriz. The ABV is approximately 13.0% to 13.5%. This wine is certified organic and is also vegan-friendly. The optimal drinking window is from release through the next 5 to 8 years.
