Kaiyo Japanese Mizunara Oak Japanese Whisky
Kaiyo Japanese Mizunara Oak (often simply called the "Black Label") is the standard-bearer for the Kaiyo brand. This expression is a teaspooned malt whisky, meaning it is primarily sourced from a single unnamed Japanese distillery with a trace amount of malt from another, which classifies it as a blended malt. It is uniquely matured in rare, handmade Mizunara oak casks—a wood known for being difficult to cooper but highly prized for its aromatic influence. Following its initial aging, the barrels undergo a three-month ocean voyage from Osaka, which uses the natural motion of the sea to encourage deeper interaction between the wood and the spirit.
Whisky Description
This whisky presents a pale, straw-like gold color. The nose is exceptionally fragrant and typical of the Mizunara influence, offering aromas of sandalwood, incense, and fresh tropical fruits like pineapple and coconut, followed by a hint of jasmine and orange peel. On the palate, the body is smooth and medium-weight, delivering flavors of honey, vanilla sponge cake, and green apple, which transition into a savory mid-palate featuring black tea and alpine herbs. The finish is long and warm, characterized by fading baking spices, cinnamon rolls, and a refined woody sweetness. It is bottled un-chill filtered at 43% ABV.
