K Vintners King Coal 2020

K Vintners King Coal 2020

Introduction

This red wine originates from the United States, specifically from the Royal Slope subregion of the Columbia Valley in Washington State. K Vintners was established in 1999 by self-taught winemaker Charles Smith, a former rock band manager who was named 'Winemaker of the Year' by both Food & Wine and Wine Enthusiast. The winery's philosophy emphasizes small-batch, single-vineyard productions that utilize native yeasts and traditional methods, such as whole-cluster fermentation, to create wines with a distinct sense of place and 'rockstar' personality.

Wine Description

K Vintners King Coal is a bold and structured red with a deep, shimmering crimson-purple colour. The nose is 'earthy with a capital E,' offering a brooding bouquet of currants, black olive, and wild green herbs accented by notes of graphite, tobacco, and white pepper. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and intense, delivering a mélange of dark berries, black licorice, and sarsaparilla over a core of fine-grained, 'edgy' tannins. It is characterized by its commanding presence, mineral tension, and a long, multi-layered finish that replays notes of cacao bean and ancient spice.

Food Pairing

The 'mightily-structured' nature of King Coal makes it an ideal partner for rich and savoury dishes. It pairs perfectly with grilled ribeye steak, barbecued ribs, or a wild boar ragu served over pappardelle. Its earthy and herbal undertones also complement herb-crusted rack of lamb, venison medallions, or roasted winter vegetables with balsamic glaze. For a cheese course, consider serving it with an aged, sharp white cheddar or a complex smoked gouda.
