Pierre Troupel Chateauneuf du Pape 2022
Pierre Troupel Châteauneuf du Pape 2022 is an elegant red wine from the Southern Rhône Valley in France.
The wine is produced by Domaine Clef de Saint Thomas, an estate located in the heart of the Châteauneuf du Pape village. The Pierre Troupel cuvée serves as a tribute to the grandfather of the current owner, Sophie Kessler-Matières, who was known for his piercing blue eyes reflected in the wine's distinctive blue label. The winery's philosophy emphasizes traditional methods and site-specific expression, sourcing fruit from high-quality plots in the 'Charbonnières' and 'Cansaud' lieux-dits, where vines are grown on a mix of sand and calcareous soils.
Wine Description
This 2022 vintage presents a clear, medium garnet-red colour. The aromatic profile is intense and fruit-forward, featuring a 'berry explosion' of blackberries, raspberries, and red cherries, layered with floral notes of violets, dried orange peel, and warm baking spices. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied and well-rounded, displaying a silky core of bright red fruit, liquorice, and grilled herbs. It is characterized by its lovely liveliness, fine tannins, and a fresh, ethereal finish.
The varietal composition for this vintage is an equal blend of 50% Grenache and 50% Syrah. The grapes are 100% hand-harvested in mid-September, totally destemmed, and fermented at 25°C. Traditional maturation takes place in stainless steel tanks to preserve the wine's primary fruit and mineral character. The wine has an ABV of 14.5% and the estate holds HVE (High Environmental Value) Level 3 certification for its sustainable agricultural practices.
Food Pairing
The fresh acidity and spicy fruit profile of this Châteauneuf du Pape make it an ideal companion for traditional French dishes and grilled meats such as herb-crusted lamb or beef entrecôte. It also pairs effectively with roasted duck, charcuterie boards, and vegetarian dishes featuring earthy mushrooms. For a cheese course, it complements a variety of options ranging from aged Comté to creamy Bleu d'Auvergne.
Vintage Quality
The 2022 vintage in the southern Rhône was defined by fierce heat and significant drought conditions throughout much of the growing season. These challenging conditions resulted in lower yields but high-quality, healthy fruit with thick skins, producing reds that are deeply coloured, concentrated, and potent with ripe, 'baked' fruit profiles. Winemakers were credited with successfully managing water stress to maintain a surprising level of freshness and balance in the final wines.
