Georgian Valleys Saperavi 2023
Introduction
This red wine originates from Georgia, specifically from the Kakheti region. Produced by Tbilvino under the Georgian Valleys label, the winery was once the largest wine company in the Soviet Union before being acquired in the early 1990s by brothers Giorgi and Zura Margvelashvili. The estate's philosophy shifted from quantity to quality under their leadership, focusing on giving wines a typical Georgian identity through the use of indigenous grapes and a blend of stainless steel and traditional oak aging.
Wine Description
Georgian Valleys Saperavi displays a bright garnet or deep ruby red colour. The nose is juicy and expressive, offering aromas of fresh blackberry, cherry, and plum layered with hints of coffee, cinnamon, and vanilla. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and rich, featuring intense flavours of cassis, black fruit, and liquorice balanced by a lively acidity and firm, chewy tannins. It is characterized by its authentic local character and a long, berry-forward finish with notes of oak and sweet spices. This 100% Saperavi wine typically has an ABV of 13% and is produced using hand-selected grapes from vineyards located at altitudes of 200 to 700 metres. While the winery employs modern vinification techniques in stainless steel and partial maturation in wooden barriques, this specific bottling is not certified organic. The optimal drinking window is from release through 15 years, as the wine has significant aging potential.
