Garzon Balasto 2020
Garzón Balasto originates from Uruguay, specifically from the Maldonado region on the Atlantic coast. Bodega Garzón is a family-owned winery founded by Alejandro P. Bulgheroni, who pioneered viticulture in this area and gained global recognition as the Wine Enthusiast 'New World Winery of the Year' in 2018. The winemaking philosophy, led by consultant Alberto Antonini and winemaker Germán Bruzzone, focuses on expressing the unique spirit of the Uruguayan terroir. The wine is named after 'balasto,' the decomposed granite soil of the estate that is billions of years old and provides the excellent drainage and minerality essential to the wine’s character.
Wine Description
This iconic red blend presents a complex sensory profile with notable energy and vitality. The aromatics are impressive, featuring fresh red and black fruit notes alongside elegant spices, orange blossoms, and hints of minerals and tar. On the medium-bodied palate, the wine displays juicy, polished tannins that provide a refined texture and a long, persistent finish. Its structure is defined by a complex dynamic between musky dark cherry fruit and subtle oak influences.
Varietal Composition: A blend typically dominated by Tannat, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, often including Marselan in certain vintages. For example, the 2020 vintage comprises 42% Tannat, 39% Cabernet Franc, and 19% Petit Verdot.
Stylistic Notes: The wine undergoes fermentation in cement tanks before aging for 20 months in large, untoasted French oak barrels to preserve its fresh fruit profile and mineral tension.
ABV: 14%.
Organic and Sustainable Status: Bodega Garzón is a leader in sustainability, being the first winery outside North America to pursue LEED certification; the wine is also classified as vegetarian and vegan.
Food Pairing
The robust tannins and vibrant acidity of Balasto make it a versatile partner for rich and flavourful dishes.
Grilled Meats: Pairs excellently with traditional Uruguayan barbecue (asado), grilled ribeye, or roasted lamb.
Savoury Dishes: Complements wild boar stews, hearty beef casseroles, or dishes seasoned with fresh mountain herbs.
Hard Cheeses: Matches well with aged, nutty cheeses such as Manchego or mature Parmesan.
