This serious yet approachable red wine originates from the United States, specifically from premier winegrowing regions across California. Launched in 2011, Conundrum Red is part of the Wagner Family of Wines, the same family behind the iconic Caymus Vineyards. The winery's history dates back to 1972 when Charlie Wagner Sr. co founded Caymus; he inspired the Conundrum label by his radical habit of blending wines at the dinner table to find the 'perfect glass' for his meal. Today, his grandson Charlie Wagner II continues this legacy, sourcing fruit from famed and off the beaten track counties including Napa, Monterey, Santa Barbara, San Benito, Solano, and Tulare.

Wine Description

Conundrum Red presents a deep ruby colour and a rich, appealing sensory profile. The nose is complex and almost floral, offering aromas of ripe plums, lavender, and dark mixed berries, layered with earthy undertones of cocoa, baking chocolate, and subtle mesquite smoke. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and 'plush', showcasing immediate flavours of black cherry and sweet plum that transition into concentrated notes of dried dark fruit and dark chocolate. It is characterized by a 'defining texture' produced from round yet grippy tannins and a balanced acidity that ensures a silky mouthfeel. The finish is remarkably long, carrying lingering impressions of cocoa powder and gentle smokiness. While the exact varietal composition is a proprietary secret, it is primarily a blend of Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
