Condesa Prickly Pear and Orange Blossom Gin
Introduction
Condesa Prickly Pear and Orange Blossom Gin is a spirit from the country of Mexico, specifically the region of Mexico City (CDMX). The gin is produced by Flor de Luna, a micro-distillery established in Mexico City in 2015. It is noted for being the first distillery in Mexico where only women maestras destiladoras (master distillers) work, led by Maestra Destiladora Hillhamn Salome. The name 'Condesa' is inspired by the thriving, artistic neighbourhood of La Condesa in Mexico City.
Spirit Description
This gin is an Extra Dry Gin that is formulated to capture the essence of a sunny Mexican afternoon. The key botanicals include juniper berries, coriander seeds, xoconostle (magenta prickly pear), orange blossom, raspberry, and lime zest. The base spirit is derived from Mexican grains, including rye, corn, barley, and wheat. The distillation is done in handmade copper pot stills with reflux chambers. The spirit is described as clean, bright, and fragrant, combining indigenous desert cactus fruit with soft floral notes. On the nose, it offers aromas of fresh prickly pear and delicate orange blossom. The palate delivers flavours of vibrant prickly pear, floral orange blossom, and a pop of raspberry acidity. It is smooth, refreshing, and balanced, with a body that is approachable and enjoyable. The finish is long and elegant, with lingering floral and fruity notes. It is bottled at 43% ABV.
