Chateau Quintus 2020
Introduction
Château Quintus 2020 is a prestigious red wine from France, produced in the Bordeaux region and the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé appellation. The estate, located on a high promontory with diverse topography, is owned by Domaine Clarence Dillon, the same family behind the First Growth Château Haut-Brion. Since its acquisition and renaming in 2011, Quintus has been overseen by the winemaking team of Haut-Brion, with a philosophy focused on rigorous vineyard management and precision to showcase the potential of the exceptional Saint-Émilion terroir. The name 'Quintus' is Latin for 'the fifth,' symbolizing the five directions, or the balance between the human horizon and the voice of nature.
Wine Description
The wine has a deep, purple-black color. The aromatic profile is complex and powerful, bursting with concentrated layers of ripe red and black fruit, including crushed blackberries, boysenberries, stewed plums, and black raspberry. Notes of chocolate mint, clove oil, star anise, lilacs, and crushed rocks add sophistication and minerality.
Varietal Composition: 62.5% Merlot and 37.5% Cabernet Franc. The high percentage of Cabernet Franc is credited with adding beautiful structure, freshness, and depth.
Body and Palate: Full-bodied, seamless, and integrated, with a fleshy, dense, and layered texture. The rich black and blue fruit is supported by an "electric backbone of freshness".
Structure: The tannins are impeccable, tightly knit, and finely grained, providing a smooth, juicy texture. Critics note its excellent balance despite the high alcohol.
Aging: Aged in French oak barrels (37.2% new for the 2020 vintage).
ABV: High for the region, noted at 15.4%.
Optimal Drinking Window: Long-term aging potential, from 2025 to 2047.
