Chateau Pontet Canet 2002

Chateau Pontet Canet 2002

Introduction

Chateau Pontet Canet 2002 is a red wine from the Pauillac appellation on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, France. Recognized as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Classification, the estate was founded in the early 18th century by Jean-François de Pontet, the royal governor of the Médoc. Under the leadership of Alfred Tesseron, who took management in 1994, the winery became a pioneer of sustainable viticulture in Bordeaux, eventually becoming the first Grand Cru Classé to achieve full biodynamic and organic certification.

Wine Description

This wine exhibits a dark garnet to intense ruby colour. The aromatic profile is complex and mature, featuring notes of blackberry, cassis, and red fruits intermingled with liquorice, bay leaf, and menthol. On the palate, it is medium to full bodied with a firm structure, displaying flavours of black plum, chocolate, and herbs. The wine is characterized by silky yet present tannins and a long, fresh finish with earthy undertones of leather and tobacco. Composed of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, the 2002 vintage has an ABV of 13%. .

Food Pairing

This classic Pauillac pairs exceptionally well with rich red meats, such as grilled entrecôte with Béarnaise sauce or a traditional bone in sirloin. Its structured tannins and minerality also complement game dishes like venison or duck confit. For a more regional pairing, consider serving it with roasted Pauillac lamb prepared with garlic and fresh herbs like parsley and basil, which highlight the wine's spicy notes.

Vintage Quality

The 2002 vintage was defined by a challenging, cool spring and average summer that delayed ripening. However, an exceptionally hot and dry September provided a 'miracle' finish, allowing the Cabernet Sauvignon to achieve outstanding maturation and concentration. Despite low yields across the region, meticulous vineyard management at Chateau Pontet Canet resulted in a well balanced wine that is considered superior to many other vintages from the same decade.
