Chateau Marquis de Terme 2022
This acclaimed French red achieved significant global recognition after being named #30 on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of 2025, a prestigious list released in late 2024.
Chateau Marquis de Terme originates from France, specifically from the Bordeaux region and the prestigious Margaux appellation. The estate's modern history began in 1762 as a wedding dowry for François de Peguilhan, Marquis de Terme, whose name it still bears. In 1935, Pierre Seneclauze acquired the property, and it remains a family owned estate today, managed by his three sons. The winery follows a philosophy of precision and low intervention, utilizing sustainable practices that led to official organic certification in 2017.
Wine Description
This Grand Cru Classé presents a deep and intense ruby or purple red colour and a medium to full body. The sensory profile is complex, featuring a nose of blackcurrant, blueberry, and pomegranate, accented by notes of violet, cedar, menthol, and black chocolate. On the elegant palate, it delivers flavours of sweet fresh blackberries, cocoa, and fleshy black cherry, given restraint by hints of slate, graphite, and pink peppercorn. The finish is long and fresh, showcasing silky, delicate tannins and a touch of liquorice.
Varietal Composition: Typically a blend of approximately 55% to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% to 39% Merlot, and 5% to 7% Petit Verdot.
Stylistic Notes: The wine is celebrated for its charming balance, purity, and mineral character, partly achieved through the use of concrete egg shaped vats during aging.
ABV: Generally ranges between 13% and 14%.
Organic Status: The estate is 100% certified organic.
Food Pairing
The structured tannins and concentrated fruit of Marquis de Terme make it an excellent match for a variety of classic and savoury dishes. Suggested pairings include:
Meats: Charcoal grilled lamb chops, duck magret, roast chicken, and beef tenderloin.
Savoury & Earthy: Mushroom based dishes, truffle risotto, and lentil and tomato stew.
Cheese: Pairs well with soft cheeses like Camembert, smoked cheeses, or aged Comté.
Alternative: Its elegance also complements Asian dishes and hearty fish courses such as tuna.
Vintage Quality
The 2022 vintage in Margaux is regarded as having impressive quality potential, characterized by intense and concentrated fruit. Despite a challenging growing season with hot conditions, the winemaker utilized manual harvesting and severe sorting to maintain precision and freshness. The resulting wine is noted for being particularly luscious while maintaining a lower alcohol level of 13%, reflecting the regularity and depth of the estate's gravelly soils.
