Chateau Leoville Las Cases 1998
Introduction
Produced in the prestigious Saint Julien appellation of Bordeaux, France, this wine is a benchmark of the Medoc. Chateau Leoville Las Cases was once part of the massive Leoville estate and has been owned by the Delon family since the late 19th century, with Jean Hubert Delon currently at the helm. Their winemaking philosophy centers on rigorous selection and a commitment to producing wines with immense structure and longevity, often referred to as having the 'soul of a First Growth'.
Wine Description
This 1998 vintage displays a deep, dark ruby colour with slight bricking at the rim. The aromatic profile is complex and evolving, featuring notes of blackcurrant, cedar, graphite, and tobacco leaf, complemented by subtle hints of spice and forest floor. On the palate, the wine is full bodied and powerful, showing great concentration of fruit balanced by firm, well integrated tannins and a fresh acidity. The varietal composition is a classic blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, with smaller portions of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Now nearly three decades old, this wine is within its optimal drinking window, showing beautiful maturity while retaining enough structure to last several more years.
