Chateau Lagrange 2021
Introduction
Chateau Lagrange 2021 is a prestigious red wine from the Saint Julien subregion of Bordeaux, France. This historic estate was classified as a Third Growth in the 1855 Classification and is currently owned by the Japanese liquor group Suntory. Since 1983, under the vision of uncompromised quality, the winery has undergone a spectacular restructuring of its vineyards and cellars to achieve the highest precision in its winemaking. The team, led by winemaker Matthieu Bordes, focuses on a plot by plot approach to vinification to faithfully express the diversity of its gravelly soils.
Wine Description
This wine exhibits a dark red colour with a crimson tint and lovely density. The nose is super floral and expressive, offering scents of peony, rose, and violet alongside notes of blackcurrant, red fruit, cedar, and tobacco. On the palate, the wine is medium bodied and supple with a fleshy attack, delivering flavours of wild berries, plum, and red cherry with hints of savoury slate and chocolate. It is characterized by its elegant balance, vibrant acidity, and silky but firm powdery tannins that provide a strong structure. The blend consists of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot, marking the highest percentage of Cabernet ever used at the estate. The ABV is 13% and the wine is produced following sustainable practices, including Terra Vitis and High Environmental Value level 3 certifications. The optimal drinking window is from 2025 to 2050.

Food Pairing
This classic Saint Julien is best served with a variety of meat dishes such as roasted beef, lamb, veal, or duck. It is also an excellent match for braised and grilled dishes, game, hearty fish courses like salmon or tuna, and savoury mushroom based pasta. For cheese pairings, consider aged and firm varieties to complement the wine's tannic framework.
Vintage Quality
The 2021 vintage in Saint Julien is described as a 'winemaker's year' due to challenging weather conditions including frost, a cool growing cycle, and high mildew pressure. However, a risky decision to wait for a late harvest in October rewarded the estate with concentrated Cabernets of high aromatic precision and finer tannins. The resulting wines are often compared to the elegant style of the 2000s, featuring lower alcohol levels and a fresh, 'neo-retro' balance.
