Chateau Lagrange 2016

Chateau Lagrange 2016

Introduction

Château Lagrange 2016 is a red wine from France, produced in the Bordeaux region and the Saint-Julien appellation. Classified as a Troisième Grand Cru Classé (Third Growth) in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, the estate spans 118 hectares in one block within Saint-Julien. Since its acquisition by the Japanese group Suntory in 1983, the château has undergone spectacular restructuration and investment, leading to its acknowledgement as one of the best-performing estates in the Médoc. The winery's philosophy emphasizes great care in the vineyard and plot-by-plot vinification, giving birth to a rich and elegant wine.

Wine Description

The wine has a deep garnet-purple or dark, almost black colour with purple light reflections. The aromatic profile is intense, focused, and expressive, featuring layers of black cherry, blackcurrant, blueberry pie, and cassis. Notes of cedar, graphite, liquorice, and spices (like pepper) are also present. The varietal composition is typically 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, and 6% Petit Verdot. It is a medium to full-bodied wine. The palate is full of juicy black fruits, with great energy, precision, and a vibrant, tight texture. The tannins are finely textured, chalky, and persistent, leading to a vivacious, spicy, and almost peppery finish. Stylistically, it is a harmonious, seamless, and elegant wine, considered one of the best ever produced at the property. The wine is aged for 21 months in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new. The finish is long, focused, and persistent. The ABV is either 13.4% or 13.5%. The optimal drinking window is long-term, from 2022 to 2047, or until 2040 and beyond. The winery practices sustainable viticulture and is certified ISO 14001.

Food Pairing

This exceptional Bordeaux pairs excellently with meat dishes. Suggested pairings include roasted rack of lamb, beef Wellington, honey-glazed duck, veal, pork, game, and grilled or braised dishes. It also complements aged hard cheeses like Comté.

Vintage Quality

The 2016 vintage in Bordeaux is widely regarded as one of the great years of the 21st century. A rainy spring was followed by one of the hottest and driest summers ever, leading to small berry sizes. The result is a wine with complexity, density, and great balance, combining the exuberant texture of 2009 with the precision of the 2010 vintage.
