Chateau Angelus 2019

Chateau Angelus 2019

Produced in France, Chateau Angelus is a prestigious estate situated on the south facing 'foot of the hill' in the Saint Emilion appellation of Bordeaux. The de Boüard de Laforest family has managed the property for eight generations since 1782, with the estate famously named after the three nearby churches whose angelus bells could be heard from the vineyards.

Wine Description

The 2019 vintage presents a deep garnet-purple or almost black robe with brilliant violet reflections. The nose is remarkably expressive and pure, bursting with aromas of black plums, wild cherry, and Morello cherries, intertwined with complex notes of candied violets, star anise, licorice, and sweet spices. On the palate, the wine is full bodied and velvety, displaying concentrated layers of dark chocolate, forest floor, and mineral undertones. Its structure is defined by fine grained, 'pixilated' tannins and a vibrant line of acidity that provides exceptional tension and a long, perfumed finish.

Accolades

  • "Wine Advocate - 99 points."

  • "James Suckling - 98 points."

  • "Vinous - 97 points."

  • "Decanter - 98 points."

  • "Jeb Dunnuck - 98 points."

Food Pairing

The wine’s depth and fine tannin structure pair beautifully with tender meat dishes such as Chateaubriand, roasted leg of lamb with Provencal herbs, or small game like roast pigeon. It also complements dishes featuring truffles or rich sauces that mirror the wine's earthy complexity. For a cheese course, select uncooked pressed cheeses like Cantal or Saint Nectaire, while a dark chocolate tartlet serves as an excellent dessert match.
