Castello di Montepo Sassoalloro Oro 2021
Introduction
Castello di Montepò Sassoalloro Oro 2021 is a prestigious red wine from Italy, specifically from the Maremma region in Tuscany. This label marks a significant evolution in the Biondi Santi family's winemaking journey, which began in the 1800s when Ferruccio Biondi Santi first identified the specific Sangiovese Grosso clone that would define the history of Brunello di Montalcino. Under the leadership of Jacopo Biondi Santi and his son Tancredi, the estate's philosophy at Castello di Montepò emphasizes the potential of their exclusive 'BBS11' clone to express elegance and finesse in the unique, high-altitude marl soils of Scansano.
Wine Description
The Sassoalloro Oro 2021 is a monovarietal red entirely produced from Sangiovese Grosso BBS11 grapes. It presents a deep ruby colour, almost impenetrable, which heralds the wine's considerable structure. The nose radiates sophisticated aromas of blackberries, raspberries, and black cherries, seamlessly layered with notes of violets, new leather, chocolate, and espresso bean. On the palate, this medium to full-bodied wine is cohesive and lush, featuring chewy, dense tannins and flavours of black cherry drizzled with chocolate. Stylistically, power and balance coexist through careful maturation for 14 months in un-toasted Tronçais oak barriques, resulting in a velvety texture and a long, persistent finish. The 2021 vintage is particularly noteworthy as it serves as the 30th-anniversary bottling. Its optimal drinking window is projected from 2024 through approximately 2030.
