Benromach 21 Years Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Benromach 21 Years Old originates from the Speyside region of Scotland, specifically the town of Forres in Moray. Founded in 1898, the distillery experienced a turbulent history of closures and changes in ownership until it was acquired by the renowned independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail in 1993. After a meticulous five year restoration, the distillery was officially reopened in 1998 by King Charles III (then Prince of Wales), with the 21 Years Old expression representing the pinnacle of its core range.
Spirit Description
This single malt is matured exclusively in first fill bourbon and sherry casks, resulting in a dark amber appearance and a medium to full body. The aroma is a sophisticated layers of sweet sherry, roasted almonds, and intense red apple, underpinned by subtle notes of ginger, oak, and a suggestion of wood smoke. On the palate, it delivers a smooth and creamy texture with initial notes of honeycomb, toffee, and cracked black pepper, followed by Seville orange, raspberry, and Medjool dates. The finish is long and elegant, characterized by charred oak, roasted chestnuts, and a lingering, soft peat smoke. It is bottled at 43% ABV and features natural colour.
Food Pairing
The complex interplay of fruit, spice, and smoke in this 21-year-old whisky makes it an exceptional companion for rich and savoury dishes. It pairs beautifully with roasted duck or foie gras, where the sherry influence complements the gamey flavours. For a cheese course, it stands up well to mature blue cheeses or aged cheddar. It also serves as a refined accompaniment to decadent desserts such as a rich chocolate torte, gingerbread, or a raspberry tart, which echoes the berry notes found in the spirit.
